ENGLISH
Developing language skills and a love of reading are high priorities at Purple Oaks Academy and we aim to support our young people to reach their individual, optimum best.
English Curriculum Vision
Pathway 1
The English provision at Purple Oaks Academy for students identified as Pathway 1 will be a forward-thinking delivery that will support our young people to make sense of the world. The focus of English will be to develop their preferred method of communication and to support them to understand and be understood in a real-world environment. When ready, they will access phonics through the Read, Write Inc programme to develop their reading skills.
Pathway 2
Students at Purple Oaks Academy that are identified as Pathway 2 will follow a bespoke curriculum that will challenge and develop their communication, written and reading skills. They will access a phonics programme (Read, Write Inc.) and a theme-based curriculum that will include enrichment activities. The focus for these students will be to develop their English skills to a level where they can understand and access the world independently.
Pathways 3 and 4
Students who are deemed to be on Pathways 3 and 4 at Purple Oaks Academy will be following the English National Curriculum, with the additional support they require. The targets for these young people will be ambitious, and they will be challenged to achieve age-related targets, qualifications and results. The focus for these learners is to prepare and give them the best chance of accessing meaningful courses in Further Education that will support their life ambitions. Those that require help with their reading will access the phonics programme and move onto Fresh Start if they still require support in Key Stages 3 and 4. Most students will move onto being free readers, and we provide time every day for them to develop their love of reading.
