Purple Oaks Academy

MATHS

Mathematics | Trawden Forest Primary School

At Purple Oaks we believe that the acquisition of basic mathematical skills is essential for life. This includes being able to use the 4 basic operations in maths, recognising and using money, telling the time, reading a schedule, measuring various quantities, and performing basic operations on a calculator.

Maths Curriculum Vision

Pathway 1

In Maths at Purple Oaks for Pathway 1, we focus on the sense of different numbers, recognising quantities and a sense of the basic shape of objects. We touch on what time and patterns mean and how we can group objects based on their properties. We also start to look at the theory of object permanence.

Pathway 2

In Maths at Purple Oaks for Pathway 2, we further develop their appreciation of quantities so that students can comprehend and use numbers up to 20. We develop the students' understanding of how these quantities can be manipulated using the 4 basic operations of mathematics and look into different measurements including length, capacity, time, money and temperature. We touch on the basics of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. Maths is taught through the method of exploration and experience so that students can use concrete examples of these different mathematical concepts.

Pathways 3 and 4

Students who are deemed to be on Pathways 3 and 4 at Purple Oaks Academy will be following the National Curriculum in Maths, with the additional support they require. The target for these students is to acquire knowledge, skills and understanding so that they might achieve qualifications that will prepare them to access courses in Further Education in order to support their life ambitions. Those that require extra help will be provided with 1:1 interventions so that they can increase in confidence and reach their own ambitious goals.
