ENGLISH
Hello, I am Cath Smith and I am lucky enough to lead English at Purple Oaks Academy. Not only do I have a life-long love of language and literature but I feel it is a privilege to be able to support our young people to use and develop their English skills to understand and be participant in the wider world. Developing language skills and a love of reading are high priorities at Purple Oaks Academy and we aim to support our young people to reach their individual, optimum best.
English Curriculum Vision (Explorers)
The English provision at Purple Oaks Academy for students identified as Explorers will be a forward-thinking delivery that will support our young people to make sense of the world. The focus of English will be to develop their preferred method of communication and to support them to understand and be understood in a real-world environment.
(Adventurers)
Students at Purple Oaks Academy that are identified as Adventurers will follow a bespoke curriculum that will challenge and develop their communication, written and reading skills. They will access an evidentiary based phonics programme (Read, Write Inc.) and a theme-based curriculum that will include enrichment activities. The focus for these students will be to develop their English skills to a level where they can understand and access the world independently.
(Voyagers)
Students who are deemed as Voyagers in Purple Oaks Academy, will be following the English National Curriculum, with the additional support they require. The targets for these young people will be ambitious and they will be challenged to achieve age-related targets, qualifications and results. The focus for these learners is to prepare and give them the best chance of accessing meaningful courses in Further Education that will support their life ambitions.
